The aim of the course would be to take a novice or non-shooter and train them in the use of handguns and carbines. The course would also include training in a variety of skills needed to mount a basic firearms operation.
The individuals would be constantly assessed and be required to pass a series of classification shoots, to a recommended and excepted standard and on each weapon, and a written test before achieving the classification of an AFO.
The individual officers will then be required to re-classify on each weapon on a bi-monthly basis and attend tactical refresher training on a regular basis
Recommended staff trainee ratio 3 staff (min) – 16 students (max): 2 weeks
Specialist Firearms Officer (SFO) Course (Phase One)
This training is designed to take selected officers to a higher level of firearms capability.

The aim of the course is to take basic firearms officers and further train them to use a greater variety of weapon options. The course will also introduce students to the skills required to resolve a number of differing firearms incidents and the planning skills to mount firearms operations.
The course will be a continual assessment of the students. They will also be required to pass a series of classification shoots, to a recommended and excepted standard and on each weapon before achieving the classification of an SFO.
The individual officers will be required to re-classify on each weapon on a bi-monthly basis and have a regular period of tactical refresher training as a team.
