Commercial Refrigerators: Why They May be Freezing

Posted on: by

It can be incredibly annoying when you open your refrigerator and everything is frozen solid. The obvious reason for this is that the interior of the refrigerator is too cold. But there can be different reasons as to why it is getting too cold, other than the temperature being too low. Most well-known brands of refrigerators work the same and it can be something that you can resolve yourself. Here are a few causes of your refrigerator freezing:

Temperature

This is one of the most obvious reasons why your refrigerator may be freezing. It is simple but sometimes people fail to notice as the mark on the thermostat adjustment knob can wear away over time. This means there is no way to accurately measure the temperature of the fridge. This knob is aso easily moved so it can be accidentally turned up when putting items in or taking them out. So, check the actual temperature of the fridge before anything else, it could be as simple as that!

Leak in the Gasket

The gasket is the lining between the refrigerator and the door. It creates a seal for the refrigerator compartment and prevents heat from being exchanged between the environment and the inside of the fridge. If the gasket is damaged and leaks, this will result in the fridge running constantly to compensate and will cause it to freeze. The best way to test whether you have a problem with the gasket on your fridge is to trap a piece of paper in the refrigerator door and try to pull it out. If the paper slides out easily or wont hold in place, then the gasket needs to be replaced.

Dirty Coils

There is an evaporator coil inside of the refrigerator and a condenser coil on the outside. These coils are important as they allow the fridge fluid to perform its task of heat exchange. If the coils are covered in dust or other forms of dirt, then the fridge has to work harder to sustain the set temperature. This is what leads to overcooling. It is always a good idea to clean the coils regularly to prevent this from happening in the future. The coils are simple to clean, you will find the instructions in the owner’s manual.

Thermostat is Defective

The thermostat is built to automatically stop once the refrigerator has reached the set temperature. This means that the temperature of the refrigerator will remain fixed. It is essential to keep the refrigerator at the desired and fixed temperature. If the thermostat is faulty, it can cause your refrigerator to overcool as its control over the temperature can be lost. It is best to replace a faulty thermostat as soon as possible.
