Types of Commercial Refrigeration

Posted on: by

Commercial refrigeration is important for any professional set up, whether that is a meat store, a restaurant or a bar. They are designed to keep valuable ingredients and beverages chilled and ready to be served to customers. There is a wide selection of commercial refrigerators, all with different benefits. Here is a breakdown of the most common types of commercial refrigeration:

Reach-In Refrigeration

These are vertical units that are designed to be placed in restaurants and commercial kitchens. Reach-in refrigerators have a smaller footprint in kitchens and will be placed at key locations, allowing staff to quickly find ingredients. They are great for situations where it is necessary for staff to remain close to their stations and will have time or the opportunity to search large walk-in refrigerators.

These types of refrigerators are versatile, affordable, a reasonable size and an efficient storage option. For these reasons, you will often find reach-in refrigerators in the food service industry. They are mainly used for storing food and raw ingredients. Reach-in refrigerators can have a glass door or a solid door.

Under Counter Chiller

This is similar to a reach in a refrigerator, but the selling point for this type is that they are shorter and will fit into much smaller spaces. It is a compact, portable unit that is perfect for commercial kitchens. If you have a commercial kitchen and only need to store a few products, under counter chillers are ideal and can be used as needed.

Chest Freezers

Also known as horizontal or deep freezers, this type of static refrigerator is great when adding food items to it. Chest freezers have a lid that opens at the top and can store food at very cold temperatures, keeping the food safe for a long time. They are ideal in situations such as power outages as they will keep the food at a cold temperature. Chest freezers are also known to consume less electricity.

Walk-In Refrigerator

Walk-in refrigerators are similar to big walk-in closets or walk-in cold rooms. In commercial restaurants and kitchens, they are often used as the main cold storage area. Walk-in refrigerators are great for preserving food, ingredients, and drinks cold and fresh. If you are planning to open a restaurant, walk-in refrigerators are an optimal option as they have many advantages such as improved access and stock rotation.

Serve Over Counter

If you have a cafe, grocery store, meat outlet or a store of a similar size, server over counter refrigerators are a great choice. This type of fridge will typically have a glass window or screen, allowing staff to easily retrieve stock from the display without having to step out from behind the counter. They enhance the appeal of food items, making them look appealing to customers.

Bar Refrigerator

Bar refrigerators are generally designed with black vinyl or a stainless steel exterior, making the under counter bar look streamlined and aesthetically pleasing. They are a general-purpose appliance with ample space for drinks, garnishes and snacks. Bar refrigerators have the ability to maintain a very cold temperature, perfect for customers that are after an ice cold beverage.
