Why Is My Aircon Not Blowing Cold Air?

aircon not blowing cold air in an office space

It’s one of those roasting summer days in Yorkshire and you finally decide to click the air conditioning on. You expect a lovely blast of icy air but instead you just get a lukewarm breeze that feels more like a hair dryer. It’s annoying and it always seems to happen right when you need it most.

If you are sat there wondering why is my aircon not blowing cold air, you aren’t alone. We get calls about this all the time at PAR Refrigeration. Usually it is something simple that you can sort yourself but sometimes it needs a professional eye to get things back to normal.

Common reasons for an aircon not blowing cold air

One of the first things we tell people to check is the thermostat. It sounds a bit obvious but it is easy to knock the settings or have someone else in the house change them without telling you. Make sure it is actually set to “cool” and that the temperature is lower than the actual room temperature. If the fan is set to “on” instead of “auto” it might just be blowing air around without actually cooling it.

Another big culprit is a dirty air filter. Over time these things get absolutely caked in dust and pet hair. When the filter is blocked the air can’t flow through the system properly. This makes the unit work twice as hard and can even lead to the coils freezing up. We’ve seen units where the filter is so thick with dust it looks like a woolly jumper. Giving it a clean or swapping it for a new one can often fix the issue immediately.

Checking the outdoor unit and coils

Your air conditioning system has an outdoor part called the condenser. Because it sits outside in the elements it gets covered in leaves and dirt. If the condenser is blocked it can’t get rid of the heat from inside your house. You should check the area around the unit and make sure there’s at least a couple of feet of clear space. If it looks filthy you can gently wash it down with a hose but don’t use a high pressure washer because you might bend the delicate fins.

Inside the unit you have evaporator coils. If these get too cold because of bad airflow they can actually turn into a block of ice. If you see ice on the copper pipes or the unit itself you need to turn it off and let it melt. Running it while it’s frozen can cause serious damage to the compressor.

Potential mechanical issues and leaks

If you’ve cleaned the filters and checked the settings but the aircon not blowing cold air is still a problem then it might be something more technical. Refrigerant is the stuff that actually does the cooling. Unlike petrol in a car it doesn’t get “used up” so if it’s low it usually means you have a leak.

Identifying a refrigerant leak is tricky and it is actually illegal for anyone who isn’t F-Gas registered to handle it. If you hear a hissing sound or see greasy stains around the pipe joints you should give us a call at PAR Refrigeration. We can find the leak and top up the gas safely.

There’s also the capacitor to think about. This is a small part that gives the motor a kick start. If it fails the fan might spin but the compressor won’t start so you won’t get any cold air. You might hear a humming noise coming from the outdoor unit if this is the case.

Why regular maintenance matters

Most of these problems are preventable if you stay on top of things. We always suggest getting a service once a year. It’s a bit like an MOT for your cooling system. We come out and check the gas levels, clean the coils and make sure the electrical bits are all tight.

At PAR Refrigeration we handle everything from small home units to big commercial systems across Wakefield, Leeds and the rest of Yorkshire. We know how a breakdown can ruin your day especially if you’re running a business where the temperature matters.

When to call in the experts

Sometimes you can’t fix it with a vacuum cleaner and a new set of batteries for the remote. If you’ve tried the basics and it’s still blowing warm air it is better to call someone in before the problem gets more expensive. A system that’s struggling will use way more electricity and that will show up on your bills.

We offer a 24-hour callout service because we know things don’t always break during office hours. Whether it’s a simple repair or you need a whole new air conditioning installation we are happy to help.

Air conditioning isn’t just about comfort; it’s about making sure your environment is healthy and your equipment is running efficiently. If you are still stuck just get in touch and we can talk you through the next steps.
